This comic tale of an anarchistic social outcast is the early masterpiece that propelled the career of master French director, Jean Renoir (La Regle Du Jeu). Boudu, a disillusioned, ageing tramp, attempts to commit suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. He is rescued, however, by a prosperous Parisian bookseller, who tries to reform the vagabond in the ways of bourgeois life. Boudu is less than grateful, and abuses his rescuer before seducing his host's wife with his anarchic charm. Finally, and in danger of succumbing to the trappings of middle-class society, the curmudgeonly tramp commits one final act of rebellion. Remade in 1986 as Down and Out in Beverly Hills (starring Nick Nolte and Bette Midler), this bold and often hilarious satire is a timeless French film classic.
