Synopsis

Monte Hellman’s road movie masterpiece stars pop idols James Taylor and Dennis Wilson (of The Beach Boys) as two nameless motor heads drag racing across America. In the tradition of Easy Rider, Hellman's stark journey along an American road to nowhere follows ‘the driver’ (Taylor) and ‘the mechanic’ (Wilson) in their souped-up ’55 Chevy until they pick up a lone girl (Laurie Bird) on the highway, and their course changes forever. Jealousies and tensions soon simmer between the road warriors before a middle-aged, alcoholic loner driving a Pontiac GTO (Warren Oates) challenges them to a race for the Pontiac, and the girl. The Village Voice praised Hellman's “feeling for the vast inhuman distances which form the face of America and the character of her people” in this cult 70s road movie that is finally available on DVD in Australia.
