Synopsis
For two decades Lars Von Trier has re-defined European cinema with his ground-breaking films, from Breaking the Waves (1996) to The Idiots (1998) both included in this collection - Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003) and Manderlay (2006). Von Trier led the radical Dogme95 film movement - a collection of directors committed to low budget filmmaking utilizing location shooting in natural light and use of hand-held cameras - and this stunning collection features two of his best-known and provocative films; in addition to a fascinating documentary on the filmmaking life of the great Danish director.
Titles include:
Breaking the Waves (1996)
In a small Scottish village, Bess (Emily Watson) flaunts the will of the towns austere churchmen to marry Jan, a lusty Swede working in a nearby oil rig. Her purity is put to the ultimate test when Jan is crippled in an accident and she agrees to continue their love-making vicariously through other men.
Winner, Grand Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival (1996)
The Idiots (1998)
Von Trier utilises his convention-breaking Dogme 95 filmmaking technique to capture an obnoxious group of yuppie misfits as they release their 'inner idiot' by indulging in public nudity, poor table manners and a notorious orgy.
"With shocking humor and surprising grace, Von Trier creates something unique and memorable." Rolling Stone
Tranceformer: A Portrait of Lars Von Trier (1997)
A revealing documentary on the life and art of Von Trier offering rare insights into an erratic, genius director full of ideas, eccentricities, phobias, and a warm sense of humour. Includes cuts from his childhood experimental films made with his mother's Super-8 camera, his earliest features films including The Kingdom and Zentropa, and features extensive insights into the making of Breaking the Waves, including interviews with leads Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and cinematographer Robby Mueller.
