Synopsis
A powerful, intelligent and disturbing political film about the 'disappeared' in Argentina in the 70s and 80s, The Official Story deservedly won the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar in 1986.
Buenos Aires schoolteacher Alicia (Norma Aleandro, in a masterclass performance that won her best actress at the Cannes Film Festival) lives in middle-class comfort with her entrepreneur husband and adopted daughter, and in blissful ignorance of the evils perpetrated by her country's government. A teacher of pro-government revisionist history the official story - Alicia soon starts on a moral and political reawakening, however, when she suspects that her adopted daughter is the child of a murdered political prisoner. As suppressed feelings and buried truths surface, Alicia is forced to confront the stark reality, not only about political oppression, but the basis of her own relationship.
