Synopsis

Barry Humphries remains Australia’s best-known, and loved, comedian, satirist and character actor, with his alter ego Dame Edna recently celebrating her 50th year in show business. Central to his early career rise was a series of wonderful film performances, most notably in the outrageous Barry McKenzie series – based on a comic strips conceived by Humphries for Private Eye magazine - and the classic footy spoof, The Great McCarthy, included with Barry McKenzie Holds His Own in this compilation of Humphries’ finest moments on film.

Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974)

Aunt Edna Everage (Barry Humphries) is returning from London with her hapless loud-mouthed, sex crazed nephew, Barry McKenzie (Barry Crocker), when she is mistaken for the Queen of England by a couple of Eastern European ratbags. She is kidnapped and taken to Transylvanian in a bid to boost their struggling tourist industry. Excitement brews and Fosters flows as Bazza sets out to rescue the Dame-to-be in distress from the clutches of Erich Count Plasma (Donald Pleasance).

The Great McCarthy (1975)

The adventurous and amorous exploits of ‘Footy’s Most Forward Full Forward’! Barry Humphries and John Jarratt headline a top-notch cast of well-loved Aussie actors (including Max Gillies, Chris Haywood and Kate Fitzpatrick) and legendary football personalities (Lou Richards, Jack Dyer) in this hilarious tale of a young man’s life and love of our great Australian game.
