While rail travel has always inspired romance and adventure, much remains undiscovered about the diminutive, narrow-gauge railways which, since the early 1800s, have traversed impossible terrain to link remote settlements with main cities. Lying 40 kms east of Melbourne in the scenic Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of the tiny train age, built to serve at the turn of the century, and still running regularly in the mountain district between Belgrave and Gembook. The sole survivor of four experimental lines used to develop inaccessible rural areas around Melbourne in the early 1900s, this endearing film shows how Puffing Billy has developed into a major tourist attraction, and how hundreds of dedicated volunteers maintain its operation.
