Cult filmmaker Joe Dante (Gremlins) invites you to journey back to a time of outrageous movie-theatre gimmicks and larger-than-life B-movie thrills in this charming homage to the great sci-fi and horror flicks of the 1950s and 1960s.
John Goodman (ARGO, The Artist) stars as Lawrence Woolsey, a William Castle-inspired movie promoter, who brings his unique brand of flashy showmanship to the unsuspecting residents of Key West, Florida.
It's 1962 and the Cold War is a growing whisper in the wind. Fifteen year-old fanboy Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton) is chomping at the bit to see Woolsey's brand new monster movie MANT! In town to promote his latest opus, Woolsey sparks interest with his outrageous atomic horror tale, weaving his one-of-a-kind movie magic and entrancing the community as only he knows how.
But as the spectacle of the MANT! premiere approaches so looms the omnipresent threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis, just 150 kilometres off the coast! With public paranoia in over-drive, Woolsey is aided by keen Gene and leading lady Ruth (Cathy Moriarty, Raging Bull) to pull out all the stops and put on a show they won't soon forget.
